Why I’m starting with a registry, not a slogan

July 15, 2026

Most campaigns open with a promise. I’m opening with a document.

My first proposal is a draft bylaw for a Road Condition and Capital Work Registry: a plain-language, public record of what work the town does on its roads and infrastructure, what it costs, and what’s planned next. It’s posted in full on the Proposals page, and you can read every clause today.

I’m leading with this for a reason. The town already collects most of this information; Ontario requires it. Residents just never get to see it. Publishing it doesn’t take new studies or new spending. It takes a decision to show the work. That’s the whole idea behind this campaign, and I’d rather demonstrate it than describe it.

It’s a draft, and I mean that word. If you read it and think a column is missing, or the language is still too technical, or there’s a reason it can’t work the way I’ve written it, tell me. Honest criticism now is worth more than applause later. Write to me at dan4cochrane@gmail.com. I answer my own email.

More proposals will follow, and each one will get a permanent home here.
